Motivate...

About Motivate ...

Between 1999 and 2010 Motivate was one of the programmes run by the Millennium Mathematics Project at the University of Cambridge.

Although the live Motivate programme activities ended in 2010, on this website you can still find a selection of the archived free online maths-based multi-media resources for schools the Motivate programme created. (Please note that the Millennium Mathematics Project has other current and continuing programmes and activities.)

Our online multi-media packs provide:

  • connections between the maths curriculum and everyday life
  • a mathematical basis for science, citizenship, and PSHE discussions
  • notes for teachers

The resources offer opportunities for students to ...

  • see how maths relates to real life and to other curriculum areas
  • engage with topical issues, using their mathematical knowledge to inform their discussion
  • find out what mathematicians actually do and the range of different contexts in which they work
  • develop their own maths
  • work collaboratively

Pack topics:

  • Maths and Our Health
    • "Eating bacon sandwiches is bad for you!" Evaluating risk
    • Epidemics: Modelling with mathematics
    • Life saving maths: How does vaccination work?
    • The economics of health: How do we decide?
    • The test is positive: But what are the odds it's wrong?
  • Disease Dynamics Schools Pack
  • Babylonian Maths

Between 1999 and 2010 ...

Motivate provided mathematically based videoconferences for schools.  The live VC programme has now ceased, but our experience in linking schools with expert speakers, with a range of rich collaborative investigative supporting resources, led to the multi-media packs which continue to be freely accessible to schools.

Motivate's sister-programmes within the Millennium Mathematics Project, NRICH and Plus, provide a huge range of further online resources. We also offer hands-on workshop programmes which can be booked to visit schools.

For more information on all of our current activities please see the Millennium Mathematics Project's website.
